76th General Convention Afterthoughts - Monday, July 27, 2009
-From The Very Rev. Morris K. Thompson, Dean - The theme for the 76th General Convention was Ubuntu, I in You and You in Me. Ubuntu is an African understanding of our human interconnectedness. Our lives are connected in a way that brings depth into relating to one another. It is a way of being. I don’t recall seeing this teaching printed in any national papers. I realize that relating a story to someone who was not present during the event is not easy. Our perspective is directly related to our point of view. And yet, Ubuntu was the bowl in which we shaped our conversations. This understanding was not reported thus the account, inadequate. This omission was no surprise, reporters know very little about Anglican polity. What they saw and described in the paper made about as much sense as my covering a convention dedicated to making decisions regarding benefits of algorithms in our daily life. For example, it was reported that four dioceses had left the Episcopal Church. Untrue. In 2000 the Episcopal Church had 110 dioceses and today there continue to be 110 dioceses in the Episcopal Church.

While the press exclusively wrote on issues of sexuality, much, much more took place. Let me briefly share with you some of my observations while in Anaheim.

The Episcopal Church is strong and vibrant. While it is true some have chosen to leave for various reasons, new faces are seeking us every day.
We resolved to live out five points of mission.
To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
To teach, baptize, and nurture new believers
To respond to human need by loving service
To seek to transform unjust structures of society
To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth
Effective and ineffective leadership producing healthy and unhealthy responses. Specifically, bishops who showed excitement about possibilities versus bishops whose anxiety encompassed their visions. Leadership is an interesting phenomenon. The deputations attitudes’ reflected their leader’s posture. Our Presiding Bishop provided a rhythm of worship, devotions, and challenges to live into the five points of mission throughout the convention. This practice was instrumental in keeping us on coarse.
One resolution of which I was particularly proud was the mandatory pension for lay employees working over 1000 hours, along with health coverage for any church employee working over 1500 hours.

In the end, General Convention was about people called upon to make difficult decisions. We made decisions the best we could. Throughout the convention the body spoke and we moved forward. I am proud I was present, honored I was asked to attend, and humbled by the work God has placed before us all. Sure we can find areas that are not to our liking, or we can see the good and give thanks.

Ubuntu, I in you and you in me. What an opportunity we have.

Episcopal Church Survey - Friday, July 10, 2009
What do you want the Episcopal Church to look like in 2019?

An eight-question survey (CLICK HERE) posted online asks Episcopalians—lay and ordained—to envision the church in 10 years' time and to prioritize the strategies toward that vision.

Do you favor a multicultural church? Is evangelism "less important," "important," or "very important" to you? Should advocacy and social justice define the church? Or should the church be a combination of mission and worship?

"We are looking at where we are as a church today and addressing hopes and desires," said the Rev. Christopher Johnson, a member of the Strategic
Planning Committee formed by Executive Council at its January 2009 meeting in Stockton, California.

Community Cupboard Receives Grant - Friday, March 13, 2009
The Christ Community Cupboard provides clothes, household supplies, personal hygiene items, and baby products for low-income families registered through the Family Resource Center (FRC), the Manchester Center, and the Community Action Council (CAC). In 2009, the funds available for the Christ Community Cupboard are projected to be significantly lower then 2008. This lower budget is unfortunately in a year that we are observing a 30-50% increase in client referrals each week from the FRCs, the Manchester Center, and the Community Action Council. Without additional funding, we would have to manage this budget situation by reducing the amount of supplies distributed per client. Therefore, we are looking for other avenues of income such as grant funding to bridge this funding gap.

We recently applied for and received a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Donor Advised Fund distributed through the Blue Grass Community Foundation in Lexington. This fund provides capital for several Priority Program Areas throughout the Bluegrass area, including Fayette County. These priority areas include, Education, Well-being of children and families, Housing and community development, Economic development, Civic engagement and positive human relations, and Cultural life. We received $3500 dollars to funding supplies used for childcare, such as diapers, baby food, and hygiene products.
